Welcome to Metanoia, 2023!

Tēnā tātou katoa, 新年快樂, and Happy Pākehā New Year to all from us at Metanoia in 2023! We thought it’d be a good chance to reintroduce ourselves, tell you about what is coming up for us this year.

Who are we?

Metanoia is an online platform which seeks to engage in public issues and Christian faith as it relates to Aotearoa New Zealand. We’re passionate about sharing robust, nuanced, and diverse perspectives and conversations about faith and life on these islands in the South Pacific.

Metanoia is run and hosted by a group of students and teachers who work in various theology, counselling, and educational spaces. You can read our bios here. We’re a team-run operation, meaning that editorial decisions are made together. Alongside our editorial team are a set of awesome regular contributors and supporters of Metanoia.

What do we do?

Metanoia shares articles, visual artwork, poetry, and other forms of multimedia content that reflects on life and faith in Aotearoa. We receive and publish articles every Thursday that seek to reflect constructively on Christianity and public life today. We’ve covered topics like the 2020 referendums on cannabis and euthanasia, sex, purity culture, and marriage, COVID-19 and the church, and the investigation into ARISE megachurch.

What’s coming up in 2023?

2023 is an election year, one that will likely set many important trajectories for coming years in New Zealand’s politics. It’s also a year in which we will continue to deal with the fallout of the pandemic, rising living costs, debates around co-governance and te Tiriti, and more. What would you like to see us cover this year? Leave a comment below!

What does ‘metanoia’ mean?

Metanoia is a Greek term used often in the New Testament. It refers to change and transformation in one’s life, often from a spiritual encounter. You can read more about that here.

How can I get involved?

I’m so glad you asked! There are a number of different ways you can get involved or help us out.

First, we are always looking for new submissions. We seek submissions that are articulate, constructive where they are critical, push against conventional thinking, and reflect on the Christian tradition. If you’re interested in submitting a one off piece or joining us as a regular contributor, get in touch!

Second, if you’re keen to support us financially, please consider joining our Supporters program. Metanoia is a completely volunteer -run organisation, but we do have a small number of costs to cover. Your support is much appreciated!

Finally, there are going to be some changes happening within our editorial team in 2023 and we are really keen to bring some new members on board! If you are passionate about writing, creativity, and debate, are looking to grow your networks and editorial skills, and believe in what we get up to here at Metanoia, we’d love to hear from you and talk more.
