Join us as we hear from the incredible Eugene Fuimaono! Eugene is a PhD candidate at the University of Otago and with him we’ll be discussing the whakapapa of colonial Christianity as it arrived in Aotearoa and still persists. What will be identified is not just the formation of colonisation historically, but also its persistent activity today and how Christians should guard against participating in it. It’ll be a fantastic evening and we hope to see you there.
Ko Ngapuhi te iwi, ko Ngāti Rēhia te hapu, ko Te Tii Mangonui te marae, tīhei mauriora. Eugene is a descendant of the various marae of Ngāti Rēhia, tracing his whakapapa through many Māori adapted colonial Christian faith movements and Māori established ones as they landed or grew upon the shores of the Bay of Islands. Eugene is submitting in May his Thesis which is centred around de-colonizing Māori cosmological terms, namely: atua, tapu and mana - initiated from his interactions with tangata whenua at the land occupation at Ihūmātao. He is a kaiako reo Māori, a musician for Māori artists, a Māori academic and reclaimer of te reo Māori for his generation.
